On May 31, 2025, the legendary musical Elisabeth 2025 made a triumphant return to Budapest Arena, featuring a dazzling star-studded cast. Original leads Kata Janza (Elisabeth) and Szilveszter P. Szabó (Death) reunited for a long-awaited, one-night-only spectacle that captivated audiences across generations.
With soloists, ensemble, choir, full orchestra, and dancers, the performance showcased historically accurate, luxurious costumes alongside meticulously crafted direction, props, and choreography. Presented in a full-length, two-act format, it was far more than a concert—it was a fully immersive theatrical experience that filled the vast arena with vibrant life.
Elisabeth 2025, with libretto and lyrics by Michael Kunze and music by Sylvester Levay, is a Vienna-born masterpiece chronicling the turbulent life of Empress Elisabeth and her fateful encounters with Death. Since its Hungarian premiere in 1996, the show has garnered a devoted following. Its universal themes, weaving together complex human relationships, continue to resonate deeply with audiences.
Under the artistic direction of Kata Janza and staging by Szilveszter P. Szabó, with musical direction by László Maklary, this extraordinary production was brought to life through the collaboration of KaposMusical and the Janza Kata Team. Costume designers SZASENKA® and Mónika Czédli infused every garment with exquisite detail and opulence.
Kata Janza portrayed Elisabeth from the age of 16 to 61 with stunning precision, illuminating the stage with her emotionally rich and powerful voice. Szilveszter P. Szabó embodied Death with an almost metaphysical presence—his captivating, profound voice left a haunting resonance throughout the arena.
Attila Dolhai’s portrayal of Crown Prince Rudolf revealed even greater emotional depth than before, expressing the pain and turmoil of a troubled life with nuanced vocal mastery. Tamás Földes, as Luigi Lucheni, impressed with natural charisma and commanding vocal strength. Ádám Bálint (Emperor Franz Joseph) delivered a superb vocal and dramatic performance, while young Jombor Horváth, portraying 10-year-old Rudolf, impressed with his clear voice and confident stage presence. Piroska Molnár brought to life the message “Music transcends all” through a soul-stirring performance that deeply moved the entire audience.

In 2025, a long-awaited event for musical fans will take center stage at Budapest Aréna. The legendary musical Elisabeth, beloved for over two decades, returns in a grand concert format featuring the original Hungarian cast. Among the stars are Kata Janza, widely known as “Hungary’s Elisabeth,” and Szilveszter P. Szabó as the enigmatic Death (Tod). This is the realization of a dream performance!
■ A Hungarian Favorite Since 1996
Since its Hungarian premiere in 1996, Elisabeth has remained one of the most talked-about musicals. Originally created in Vienna by librettist-lyricist Michael Kunze and composer Sylvester Levay, the show tells the dramatic and mystical story of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, whose turbulent life unfolds in a fantastical narrative.

■ The Story of Elisabeth, Loved by Death
The story unfolds through the eyes of Luigi Lucheni, the man who assassinated Elisabeth. Why did he commit such a deed? Through his narration, the audience journeys through Elisabeth’s complex life.
A woman who craved freedom and defied societal norms, Elisabeth (Sisi) faced estrangement from her husband, Emperor Franz Joseph, tension with her mother-in-law Sophie, and the devastating loss of her children. Her mystical and poignant connection with the personification of Death (Tod) is portrayed in a way that deeply moves the audience.

Tomoki Sakata is a brilliant Japanese pianist who won First Prize at the Franz Liszt International Piano Competition and Fourth Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition. He is renowned for his extraordinary ability to perform complete piano concerto programs in a single evening, including technically demanding works by Liszt and Rachmaninoff. In 2023, he gave a historic and unforgettable performance at the Grand Hall of the Liszt Academy in Hungary, receiving a full-house standing ovation alongside the Győr Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Kálmán Berkes.

A c-moll kitüntetett szerepet játszik Mozart életművében: e hangnemben áll sokak szerint legtökéletesebb, legválasztékosabban hangszerelt versenyműve, az 1786 áprilisában Bécsben bemutatott c-moll zongoraverseny, amely közvetlenül minden idők egyik legjobb opera buffája, a Figaró lakodalma előtt foglal helyet a műjegyzékben. Ennek megfelelően az érzelmek, a zenei karakterek szinte felfoghatatlan gazdagsága jellemzi a darabot, amelyet a nagy nemzetközi versenyek díjazottjaként jól csengő nevet szerzett, kiváló japán zongoraművész, Tomoki Sakata előadásában hallhat a közönség. Sakata Tomoki a budapesti Nemzetközi Liszt Ferenc Zongoraversenyen első díjat és hat különdíjat nyert, ezzel az első ázsiai nyertes lett a megmérettetés történetében. Sikert aratott emellett a Van Cliburn versenyen, a Kissinger Zongoraolimipán, a 2021-es Queen Elisabeth Zenei Versenyen pedig negyedik helyezett lett. Már 20 országban koncertezett olyan zenekarokkal, mint a Belga Nemzeti Zenekar, a Cseh Filharmonikusok, a magyar Nemzeti Filharmonikus Zenekar és a tokiói NHK Szimfonikus Zenekar. Emellett kamarazene-koncerteket ad, valamint zeneszerzőként, hangszerelőként is tevékenykedik. A Tokiói Művészeti Egyetemen végzett, jelenleg a Hannoveri Zene-, Színház- és Médiaművészeti Egyetem szólista szakán tanul. Pályája során elnyerte a Yokohama Kulturális Díjat és a Művészeti Ösztöndíjat.

Her favorite composer, “poet of the piano” Chopin was also beset by obstacles. Taking a winter sojourn to the Spanish island of Mallorca for his health, he wrote several masterpieces despite being told by doctors that he would die there. We follow Fuzjko as she traces Chopin’s precious time in Mallorca.
